RONDEBOSCH GOLF
COURSE
Klipfontein Road, Rondebosch East, Cape
Town, South Africa.
Ten minutes from the city centre, and situated with magnificent views of
Devil's Peak and Table
Mountain from most holes,
the Rondebosch Golf Club is a popular choice for locals and foreign visitors.
The river which winds through the course provides challenges to the players and
is home to a variety of bird life.
This course is essentially a return to the original concept of golf, being very
much a parkland-type of golf course from which the game evolved. Some tight
driving holes, compounded by undulating fairways and the ever-present threat of
strong winds provide some interesting play. The course has been changed recently
and some new features have been added making the course a good test of golf for
all levels.
NEWLANDS RUGBY
STADIUM
Newlands Stadium is located in the leafy
suburb of Newlands, Cape Town,
South Africa.
The decision to buy the ground the stadium stands on was made by the Western
Province Rugby and Football Union in 1888. The first official matches were
played at Newlands on Saturday 31 May 1890 when Villager and Stellenbosch met
in such muddy conditions that the curtain-raiser between Bishops and Hamiltons
had to be cancelled.
The records show that the university side
won by a ‘goal to a try' - the ‘goal' was described by the legendary Fairy
Heatlle as ‘the most remarkable dropped kick I have seen'. The famous ground
was to see many more such unforgettable moments. Newlands is currently the home
ground of the Stormers Super 14 side as well as the Western Province
who play in the Currie Cup. The Ajax Cape Town soccer club also plays it's home
games here. The stadium currently has a capacity of 50,900 people and is an all
seater venue
KIRSTENBOSCH
There is a granite Celtic cross in
Kirstenbosch marking the grave of the garden's first director, Professor Harold
Pearson, and it bears the inscription: 'If ye seek his monument, look around.'
It is an apt and moving injunction - the grave is surrounded by one of the
world's most famous reserves of indigenous flora.
